Verbal Altercation with drivers

December 5, 2007

Please avoid  altercation with drivers.  The  higher ups are responsible for the delays. Here is the email from Arun Padmanabhan from MMTS Travellers describing today’s incident. This post  was made possible due to him.

*********************************************************

Hi All

Though there has been a whole-hearted efforts from this group to facilitate in improving the MMTS services, it has been observed (of late) that the morning trains from falaknuma towards Lingampally are consistantly running late.

Today was a scene of outburst of commuter’s anger and frustration at Sec-Bad railway station - when the 8 04am train towards Lingampally was stranded on the 6A platform for more than 1/2 an hour. The result : roughing - up the driver verbally for misbehaving and not inquiring with station master on the reason for delay upon commuter’s request.

The point I would like to stress-upon here is that we have no infrastructure available in place for MMTS (a dedicated MMTS line) and that addition of more train services are going to add to our woes. The solution at moment and the need of the hour is to increase the rakes (probably to 9 or 12 rakes per train) and to strive to maintain the existing train services on time.

Moreover, a issue to be taken up with SCR is that MMTS trains get least priority over express/passenger trains (as could be witnessed in case of 8 04am train today). We need to stress upon getting MMTS services- the top priority.

Finally, a issue on annoucements informing about the delay and arrival of trains on platforms. With communication so advanced today, I still dont understand the reason for not keeping the commuters informed about the possible delay of train services/re-schedule of arrival platforms (through announcements as well as visual displays). There is a need for more visual displays on 6 and 7 platforms which shall provide a means of communicating the possible delays.

If SCR does not act soon, the day is not far when we shall witness commuter’s frustrations being turned into violent actions.

Arun Padmanabhan

Delays - SC-FM section

November 28, 2007

As has been reported, there have been regular delays for the past few weeks in this section for MMTS trains.

Upon Enquiry at MXT ( Malakpet ), I found out that pf # 1 in KCG has been rendered unusable due to ongoing sleeper replacement work.

If I were to consider associating a number with the difficulties even as an academic exercise, 3 pfs were in use.. now only 2 pfs. therefore, 33 % outage :P.

The current scenario of delays is expected to continue for another 30 - 40 days. Hopefully, the HYB division can come up with some incredible workaround. A display indicating estimated minimum delay for a delayed local is the first step.

Until next time,

Ananth

Letter to SECY, PG , SC

October 22, 2007

Dear Sir,

I am regular commuter by MMTS from Hitec City to
Sitaphalmandi.

I wish to bring to your notice that morning train from
falknuma to lingampally at 7:55Am is getting delayed
daily.Today it was 1/2 hour late.On same day the 7pm
train was delayed by 1 hr.There was not even a single
announcement from station master and where it is not
required they will be announcing repeatedly.

request you to address following:

1.Please add additional bogies as there is heavy rush
at peak times

2.the travel time from begumpet to sitaphalmandy is
very high as train travles at very slow speed and
stops at inner and outer signals daily.

3.Many times when train from secbad is delayed the
train from nampally is also held up at begumpet outer
signal causing heavy rush. Why cannot offcials leave
the train from nampally so the rush is eased out.

4.Increase the frequency to secbad and make the travel
time less as more and more people are using these
route.

5.what is the use of giving timetable when the trains
are coming half hour late.We start early from home
from far off places to catch train but not sure of
reaching office ontime even though we are taking
early trains.

6.There are many illegal commuters without ticket and
travelling in first class. No action is taken against
these people and TTEs harass genuine passengers when
they forgot pass.

7.The quality of bogies is bad.All screws are coming
off and rust is found on seat frames.

8.Cleaning is not proper in bogies.lot of cobwebs, dust
seen. The tube lights are not cleaned and window
glasses are broken.

9.display the destination of train on sides also

10.please provide more ticket counters at hitec and
other stations as it is taking long to buy tickets.

11.Introduce ticket vending machine with common fare

12.Provide more security on trains and stations to
check miscreants.

13.Many people are losing lives on tracks(due to their
fault).Please display boards at stations
cautioning people to use only FOBs and may impose
fines who violate this.

14.Display station names and introduce public address
system announcing as commuters are finding difficulty
in identifying station when there is heavy rush.

15.Fans are switched off and will be put on only at
secbad.it will be suffocating sometimes.

16.Sometimes train drivers are stopping at secbad for
passengers coming at last minute eventhough the train
is already late.Let them take next train instead of
catching in a hurry.

17.The quality of construction at stations is poor. All
the tiles on walls, floor are coming off which presents
a bad picture
to visitors.

18.Recently on a rainy day the begumpet paltform was
flodded with water as the roof was leaking close to
station masters cabin.

Please take this as a positive feedback from a
commuter and address the issues and make the MMTS on
par with Bombay suburban services.

Thanks
T.R.Reddy

SC- LPI - Hitec- SC

June 12, 2007

I took off for a ride to LPI and Hitec City to check out the crowd at Hitec City Station (and write about it, of course :)).
Here are the observations.

1. The 6.50 local to LPI that I expected to board from SC was late by 20 minutes. Apparently, it is a connection to a DHMU from Umdanagar ( UR ) to Falaknuma ( FM ) and the DHMU was running late by 15 minutes ( Why ??? ) .You know the rest.. ;)

2. Added to it was a surprise that it arrived on pf # 10.
So, the locals in the morning hours are being admitted onto pf #10. Hey, anything but a delay, I thought.

3. Operations should think of decoupling DHMUs and MMTS.
It is easier said than done but well worth doing it anyway.

4. Incoming Godavari Express was stabled on #6 (!!) and outgoing A.P was announced to be on #1.

5. As we crawled out of SC, we picked up speed until the R.P Road over pass and coasted to a halt at James Street.
I was on the platform side of the coach during the remainder of the journey and could not see much of the scenes at SNF. Well, I was testing an old CPU fan to work like a dynamo. More on that when things shape up.

6. We reached LPI and crawled into pf #6. As I chatted with the driver, I enquired of the reasons for the delay and found out about the DHMU connection that I had mentioned earlier.
I decided to take the 8.40 HYB local back to Hitec City. Meanwhile, the “railfan” in me was getting restless. After the customary chai-coffee, I climbed the FOB over to reach pf #1.

7. There was a WDG4 waiting with a BOXN coal rake. Apparently, all the goods rakes are being detained for hours together due to MMTS rakes. Point taken!! They could as well lay an exclusive freight line which leads straight to SNF but via Miyapur, Jeedimetla and joins the single electrified line close to Suchitra underpass on NH-7.

8. Somebody must tell the SM at LPI that they could take all HYB locals onto pf #1 and all SC locals onto pf # 6 or vice versa. There was a lot of confusion at the last minute due to ill-timed and inaccurate announcements on the PA system. I was told that yesterday, an old lady lost the connection to the outgoing Gautami Express due to such mischief. It does not take an Einstein to figure simple things out!! The SM could not tell me 10 minutes before departure which pf will be used to admit the 8.40 local to HYB. I had to sprint back to #6 at the last minute, and it was unpleasant, to say the least. By this time, the Wadi - HYB Passenger halted and left LPI so silently that I did not notice it until I saw passengers ascend the FOB from #2.

9. Before I left LPI, the goods rake on #4 left for SNF, hauled by a WDG4. I could not get the loco details in the midst of all the running around over the FOB. I guess I am getting old(er) :P.

10. I reached Hitec City taking the 8.40 local out of LPI.
I was pleased to see people waiting hungrily at Chandanagar and Hafeezpet stations. As I alighted at Hitec City Station, I decided to head out for a smoke, noticing the crowd that got off on the other platform, perhaps from a HYB - LPI local. I don’t quite remember the time. It must have passed rather quickly.

Observations at Hitec City:

a) The shelters do not cover the entire platform.

What happens when there is rain or hot sun?
The crowd is large during peak hours, specially in the evening.
Extend the shelters along the entire length of the platform. Apparently, the DRM has promised something… Vijay, please keep us updated on the same.

b) Inadequate seating arrangements
Where do passengers sit when there are no more places to sit?
Additional benches/ concrete slabs needed for seating must be erected immediately.

c) The toilets are an embarrassment. It is just gross to even try and describe them. I lodged a complaint about this issue.
The relevant complaint number is 108073.

The drain pipes of urinals were removed and the toilets had cisterns that were mercilessly destroyed. They were hanging on to their dear life.

Is this how railway officers maintain bathrooms in their homes??
I hope not!!!

There were two urinals, of which one was under repair.
They are grossly inadequate for even a single train, considering the increased traffic and the pathetic maintenance.

We need more urinals, preferably five, on the other platform.

I was rather upset that basic needs have not been recognised, realised or otherwise deliberately neglected, which is even worse.

I spoke to the Chief Health Inspector at SC about the same in person.

d) I also noticed that nearby labourers were stealing railway water from the taps. After a stern warning, I let them off the hook.

In addition, towards the LPI end of pf#2, the three drinking water outlets had their tiles stolen and the unit at the end of the platform had even the taps stolen.

The security guard from Eagle Vision Security was asleep, unmindful of the undesirables sleeping on the platform.

Why is the security so lapse? If this is the condition during broad daylight, we can imagine the situation after dusk.

e) During peak hours, both in the morning and evening,
there is a definite need for an extra hand at the ticket counters.

f) The density of the cab / auto traffic observed on the spinal road from 0900 hours to 1030 hours is to be seen to be believed.
Therefore, there needs to be a traffic polieceman/woman to regulate the traffic that is bound for the station parking lot.
I managed to regulate some of the traffic along with the policeman. Poor chap! He was wilting in the heat.

The APSRTC must be dreaming if they attribute the absence of link services to the station to poor patronage. They must certainly have circular routes from the station to Cyber Towers.

11. After a somewhat detailed survey of LPI and Hitec City,
I took the 1100 local to FM and alighted at SC, where I walked to the Chief Health Inspector’s Office on pf #1 and had a one-one discussion on the complaint mentioned earlier in this report.

In addition, I requested him to develop a 3-5 min video clip to
be aired on the CCTV. The clip should describe the locations of all the toilets, among other facilities on the station premises.

As for the number of toilets, it is a grand total of 2 (!!!), one on pf 6/7 at the MLY end and the other on pf #1 in the waiting hall.
( corrections welcome ).

The video should also describe the technicalities,
the physical and financial damage to the premises caused by seemingly innocuous act of relieving oneself on the tracks, walls and signal boxes, to name a few.

Too much to rant about… where is the initiative in SCR?? Their problems are ours and vice versa. If only they shared them with us openly, we could solve faster in unison. Last but not the least, railway staff members, Pride yourself in IR, as much as we do!!!

More to come as things unfold.

Necklace Road

September 5, 2006

Date: 04 Sept. 2006

Observations at Necklace Road Station:

  1. Poor Lighting on west side platform.
  2. No Water!!!!!!
  3. 18:23 HL MMTS delayed by 40+ minutes. Percentage= 40/50*100=80.
  4. 19:20 HL MMTS delayed by 25 minutes. Percentage = 25/50*100=50.
  5. In reference to (4) above, why are men being allowed to travel in ladies coaches? Where are the TTEs and the RPF/GRP?

Observations- Hafeezpet Cyber Towers and HiTec City

September 5, 2006

Observations at Hafeezpet:

  1. Road access only on the north side and the south side has bus bay and shelters but no buses for pick up and drop off.
  2. North side has road access but no buses that terminate, originate or operate through the station premises.
  3. The bus availability information is absent at the station.  This is vital for road connectivity. There is a bus stop nearby at the north end of the road over pass. The bus stop has no route numbers, sign boards or timing / frequency information.

Observations at Cyber Towers:

  1. Heavy traffic at the junction. Not many shared autos to Hitec-City Rail Station. Another glaring example of road connectivity problem. Poor lighting and no pavement along the spinal road. The so-called spinal road is chilling to pedestrians beyond a certain point where the road bends leftward and narrows down considerably, traveling parallel to the railway tracks. There is a sign indicating a proposed road overpass at this bend where there is absolutely no activity indicating progress on the said overpass.
  2. The APSRTC cannot run buses along the spinal road for want of overhead clearance at the road underpass currently used by motorists and bikers adjacent to the Hitec-City Rail Station.

 Observations at HiTec City Station:

  1. Poor lighting on the station premises and  along the access roads
  2. Absence of lighting in the parking lot on the south side.
  3. Access to the station pf on the south side from the parking lot is blocked. The cement staircase is obstructed by a wall.
  4. The staircase access at the west end of pf on south side is made of granite stones cemented in a haphazard manner. Why?
  5. The spinal road adjacent to the parking lot on the south side has no signboard indicating parking lot for the station.
